What is a Prop Firm?
Traditionally, proprietary trading firms were formed to trade their own capital in the markets. In past decades, there were two types: First, there are the "true" prop firms who typically require a strong background in finance and often the ability to understand complex mathematics to contribute to their automated trading systems. They, naturally, are highly selective of their traders and the vast majority of individual traders would never qualify for their employment. On the opposite end, there were prop firms who would accept virtually any trader (in some cases even requiring the trader to deposit their own risk capital) and the firm would be happy to provide additional leverage and collect commissions and exchange liquidity rebates from their own traders' frequent trades, in addition to a profit split with the trader. Some prop firms operated in the middle of that spectrum, with more selective criteria for traders they would accept.
More recently, however, a new generation of prop firms emerged with a new business model:
Today's Trader Funding Prop Firms
Traders pay a fee to participate in evaluations (combines, etc.) in which the trader must prove the ability to hit a profit target before hitting the max loss/drawdown. Each of these prop trading firms implements various rules with one major criteria in common: traders must pass evaluations under a challenging set of restrictions before being funded (ie. given access to accounts and withdraw their profits as real money.)
This site aims to be an unbiased source of information on this new generation of prop firms.
With increasing competition in recent years, many of the leading prop firms have felt the pressure to reduce the restrictiveness of their rules, making it more feasible for many traders to pass the evaluation and benefit from better discounts and offers. In many cases, it may even make sense to buy accounts with multiple prop firms if you find the right combination for your style of trading.
